Analysis

Reflecting on my BNI experience

I joined BNI in 2024 and transferred to BNI Capital Business Alliance at the beginning of 2025. I had so many 1-2-1s (met 200+ people), visited close to 30 chapters, and received many referrals — but none of the deals were closing. I was sort of lost, because businesses obviously need a website, but things weren’t working out.

Cost of services

The issue was pricing

My $5K minimum was too high for most of the small business owners I was talking with. People wanted a nice website and were willing to $100 – $3,000 but didn’t want to spend more than a monthly mortgage payment on a website. As such, I created two new packages and decided to stress affordability in my weekly pitches.

Our Website Work

Diverse Portfolio

The new pricing strategy really worked, as the business immediately took off! In the past year, I’ve done over 20+ web design projects. You can organize the websites below by category using the dropdown menu.

Select case studies

For the sake of time, I’m not going to be able to go through every project. But I do want to highlight three projects to demonstrate what I offer.

Ad-Hoc Edits

Spa 65

For clients who already have a website, we can make changes without completely overhauling it. This can be great for those who don’t have the budget for a full rebuild or who want some light cleanup. I jokingly call this my “don’t burn down the house offering”. Some of you may recall that Kevin Hu used to be a member of the chapter in the massage seat. Working with Dave Roe, who’s helping with his Google ads, I redid his pricing page. Let’s take a look!

Custom Code

Green Tech AI SaaS

One thing that sets me apart from other web designers is that I’m not exactly a web designer per se. I’m really more of a web developer. That means that I can write custom code to produce sophisticated animations and complex user interfaces — for example, bespoke quizzes, calculators, and effects. Here’s a great example of a website with complex animations — it’s a demo website for a hypothetical AI SaaS company the agriculture space and is designed in Webflow.

External Integrations

The Hope and Light Collective

Lastly, I can add external integrations into a website such as e-commerce capabilities, CRM integrations, and HIPAA compliance. One such example is Rachel Needle’s new nonprofit, The Hope and Light Collective. This is a great BNI success story. Ceylon Mitchell did the photography, I did the web design, Daniel Garedew did the payment integration, and Brian Loebig will do the SEO.

Second Pivot

Plan For The Future

I do feel like the time has come for a second pivot. I’m going to continue my small business package while also looking for higher-paying work. Here are some concluding remarks.

Financials

Annual Revenue

First, a quick breakdown of the business’s financials.
In the past year, I made about $40K (all through BNI) — so the business is a great side hustle but still not a full-time income.
One year ago, April 2025, was a big turning point for me. Most of you weren’t there, but that was my “deep dive” presentation at my power team.
Dave Roe, Nick Marks, and Brian Loebig are my biggest referral partners and have thrown tons of work my way.

Ideal Clients

Larger Clients

Second, I would like to get to a point where I can find larger clients with more robust budgets.
In the past year, I’ve probably received about 100 referrals.
Out of those, two stand out as referrals to large clients — Jae Han gave a referral to the PG County Revenue Authority and Marta Bohorquez gave one to The Treatment and Learning Centers.
It’s pretty rare to receive that though — about 1/50 referrals will be to a larger, 50+ person organization.
If anyone has strategies on how to find larger clients, I would appreciate them!

Directory Lists

Webflow

Lastly, I am trying to get on a various directory lists, where large companies refer work to me. I’m in the process of joining Automattic’s WordPress board but would like to get on Webflow’s as well.
Webflow makes up only 1% of websites online, compared to WordPress’s 45%.
But the Webflow market does seem to be higher-paying. For example, it’s very popular among tech companies like Anthropic — the company that made Claude AI.
If you know of anyone who wants a simple website with no blog or SEO and doesn’t want to pay for maintenance fees associated with updating WordPress plugins, Webflow would be a good option for them, so please refer them to me.
